Protecting Healthcare and Critical Infrastructure from Modern Malware

On May 14, 2021, hackers targeted the systems of Ireland's Health Service Executive (HSE). The hackers claimed they had spent two weeks in the HSE's systems before launching the attack and they encrypted and stole 700GB of data. Without question, hospitals are being specifically targeted by bad actors. And unfortunately, the healthcare industry is less prepared than other industries to stop these attacks and successfully retrieve data before it’s already been encrypted. Relying solely on backup recovery and defensive strategies focused on the perimeter is no longer enough. When life is on the line, there is no excuse for not having a reliable, cyber resiliency strategy in place.

It is a matter of ‘when’

With the rise in Ransomware, many healthcare concerns to address the problem fall prey to some solutions that promise to "Eliminate Ransomware." These are false claims – in truth, there is no way to eliminate Ransomware. Ransomware is big business, and malicious actors are constantly creating new ways to penetrate infrastructure that will halt business while impacting the lives of all those involved.

When it comes to healthcare systems, time is even more critical because lives are at stake as well as your ability to deliver quality care to the people who need it the most.  Adding insult to injury, many healthcare organizations have another problem with Ransomware – the data can be exposed, creating a PII nightmare that can lead to fines on top of the cost of recovery. There are many factors to consider when working to ensure that data is secure and recoverable.

There is no way to eliminate the threat of ransomware, but you can be prepared with a multilayered approach by reducing your vulnerability, increasing your protection, and enhancing your overall resiliency.

How Veritas does it

Veritas shares your concerns, which is why we’ve made backup and recovery part of a comprehensive, multilayered resiliency framework.  This framework supports the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST’s) protect, detect and recover components of an organization’s overall cybersecurity strategy. Veritas empowers our healthcare and public sector customers to:
