BESR Server Edition - Progress and Performance locking up

BloodBaz

Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me with an issue we are having with BESR during the "Creating recovery point" process.

We have BESR Server Edition running on Windows Server 2008 Standard.

We have a RAID 5 disk array partitioned into C: (System) and D: (Data).

We also have a cheap large hard disk as the backup target (B:)

We have had a BESR scheduled backup that was running fine (two scedules - one for C: one for D: to run on separate days) but now the process pauses indefinitely at the end of the backup (after the actual main backup part has completed.).

Two screenshots below show the point where the backup stops indefinitely (The UI animation does continue etc.)

When launching the main client, the following dialogue appears:

Other useful info:

There is plenty of space on all hard disks.

Backup set is 10Gb (C:) and 40Gb (D:).

Problem occurs irrespective on which drive (C:) or (D:) that we are backing up.

I've left it 24 hours but doesn't end even though the actual backup only takes minutes.

VSS and "Previous Versions" is enabled and running on both partitions.

No configuration changes that we know have occurred recently to cause this.

All hardware/disks are < 6 months old.

I've tried a reboot but problem still occurs on next run (manual run).

We checked BESR for updates but it is already up to date.

BESR Version is 8.0.1.24956.

Server is a DELL Server.  4GB RAM, Intel Xeon E5335 CPU @ 2GHz

Any help you can provide as to where I should look for an answer would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Chris.

Its possible the hard disk that are being backed up are heavily fragmented. I would defragment the disk. If this does not resolve the issue, run CHKDSK /r /f on the drives.

I can't run CHKDSKwithout either dismounting the volume or doing it as part of a reboot.  I will schedule a check on next reboot but I doubt that I have any problems with the Hard Disk or Disk Controller.  Both are quite new (< 6 months old), server load is low and hard disk has plenty of free space.

Could certain services be a problem?  Which services (Symantec and otherwise) are required to be running for VSS backup?

(Thanks)
