BESR running on Windows SBS 20003 and makeing backup to hard drive on anonther computer running Win XP Pro.  No other apps running on backup  computer (serves ONLY as a backup device).  I have updated the registry according to instructions in Symantec Knowledge Base, but still no dice.  I can force a backup by dismounting backkup drive, but backups will not occur on schedule unattended.

Any ideas?

If you followed the steps outlined in the following two technote documents:

http://support.veritas.com/docs/303569

http://support.veritas.com/docs/304230

You might be looking at a VSS issue. If other VSS snapshot applications are installed be sure they are using the Microsoft Provider. See if you are able to schedule two backup jobs in a row at least 30 minutes apart. If the first one fails and the second one succeeds then likely another application is interfering with the Symantec VSS provider. Be sure at time of failure that VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS are showing all writers for the given system in a stable status, and that VSSADMIN LIST PROVIDERS shows the Symantec VSS provider.
