Backup fails with 0xe00084f4 when overwrite is selected

Append jobs work fine.  Media overwrite protection is off.I did a long erase on a tape.  Didn't help.BE 10d.Using latest veritas drivers and latest BE 10d build.HP Ultrium 2 drive, updated firmware.  HP tape tools say the drive is fine. Failure only ...
