11D + HP MSL 6000 fails on Windows x64

Hi Everyone.

I freshly installed Backup Exec 11D 64bit on a clean Windows Server x64.
A HP MSL 6000 with 30 slots and one LTO3 is connected to a HP DL380G5
Server. From HCL I know that this drive library is supported.

But I can get one job running. I always receive following error:
Error category : Backup Device Errors
Error : e00084ed - A hardware error occurred.
For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-34029

I read the link and the other one stated several times. I followed it by
installing the latest drivers for the drive. But no change.

The same lib with BENT 10D on a different server will work.
What Do I have to do to get it running?
The old server is no option because that is out of maintenance. I will
have to use the new server with x64.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Regards.

Carsten,

Usually this error occurs because there was a communication failure between BE and the device.

Can you check you System Event Viewer logs, and look for any error's at the time of the backup? If there are, please post them here.

Also, be sure that you're using the correct SCSI cable, the library is terminated properly, and that you have the latest drivers for the SCSI adapter you're using.

Hello Bradley,

thanks for your fast reply. I was out of office for 2 days.
But I checked again today.

- SCSI-cable is connect correctly; checked this twice
- I installed a newer SCSI HBA driver today > No change
- Termination looks OK

This is what Windows says today with a new backup

Any more ideas?

From my point of view it might be a driver problem or a
problem working with x64. Thanks in advance.

Carsten,

Can you check in the System Event Viewer Log? That error below is from the Application Event log.

Bradley,

sorry for that, I didnt see that.
But unfortunately there is not ONE entry in eventlog SYSTEM
during stop or start of the scheduled backup.

Because we have to get the system running (4 TB waiting to
be backed up) we just decided to set up another harddrive
partition and install WS2003 32bit + BENT 11d 32bit in parallel.

This is because we know that this tabe lib will run with BENT
10d 32bit on a different system.

But still I'm really interested to solve this 64bit.

Carsten

Hi.

We just finished setting up the server with a 32bit Windows.
And what: It does not work, too!

I still believe that there is a big bug in the tape drivers for BENT 11d.
I just called the vendor of my tape drive: they now have already
three customers with the same problem.

I think I switch back to Arcserve...

Hey Bradley,

OF COURSE I AM! (because Veritas is still #1) ;)
Do you believe we can manage this problem in this forum?
I'm on holidays right now, but I do have a 2-year-support-
option for BENT.

For me it would be best to go on in here.
What about you?

Bradley,

I have one more option left: installing BENT 10d on x86.
What do you think?

Carsten,

You can try using Backup Exec 10d, but I feel you will have the same problem. This error is only recorded because there was a communication problem with your device.

If you feel that this is a problem with our drivers, does the same error occur when you load the manufacturers device drivers?

What kind of SCSI adapter do you have the device attached to?

I can conitnue to try and assist you with this, but it may reach a point where the best solution will be to call into Technical Support.

Bradley,

you WERE TOTALLY RIGHT.

After installation of BENT 10 no change occured. After that we called a
technician to investigate in this hardware problem.

And what: THE CABLE WAS DEFECT. Even it was new and from HP.

We got a new one and now it is working properly with rates of more
than 6 GB/min.

Thanks for your good and professional advise!

i have the same issue.  it was working on a ml 370 g2... 11d 6235..
we purchased a new server dl360 g5 and installed x64 on it. with 11d 7170 hotfix 5. we are also using a lsi21320 for which we had to get a pci riser, before this we tried 4 other scsi cards.oh and we have also changed cables.. same error e00084ed.. i finally called LSI and they suggested i lower the bus on the scsi card to 80 which works, but it does 500mb/min.  very slow.. this is quite fustrating i have spent several hours with veritas techs, hp tech, lsi.  no help  if i up the bus speed I continue to get the same errror of e00084ed.  we were hoping for a faster speed.  anyone have any ideas?
