Are My VHD Files being encrypted?

We are encrypting our 2010 nightly  backup but do not think that our VHD files are encrypted. What do we need to do to insure that they are being encrypted along with the rest of the job?

Are you using hardware encrption or software encryption ?
I beleive there were some issue with GRT backup and Excryption together.
