I've applied all hotfixes but still cannot get the restore to work.  Anyone have any ideas on what is causing this?

Was able to do restores fine in U2 / U1 etc.

Thanks

Hi,

The Symantec TN below has a lot of various fixes to try with different scenarios on this issue.

Check it out and post back here with an update:

Thanks!

Hello thanks for the reply.

I've tried most of the suggestions and it's still failing.  The exchange server i'm tryring to restore is the same server as the backup server.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

You say that your are creating a backup of the PASSIVE mail database, that means you are using an Exchange DAG right ?

I think you will have to redirect your restore to the ACTIVE mail database !

Please provide additional details on the restore. Are you trying to restore the database to Recovery Database or as a flat file restore or this is a GRT restore of individual items?

If this is a database restore to flat file or Recovery database then you may be facing the issue documented in following technote:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH163798

The workaround in this case will be to restore individual mails/mailboxes using GRT.

Also if the issue matches the above technote then contact technical support so that the issue can be investigated further.

sbora:

GRT is not supported with a DAG, according to the SCL:

Application GRT does not support applications distributed over several servers such as Exchange 2007 LCR, CCR, SCR and Exchange 2010 Database Availability Groups (DAGs).

ZeroCool, there is a major difference between APP GRT and GRT. APP GRT is related to VMware backups and not normal Remote agent (exchange agent) based backups.

Its nowhere mentioned in the original post that the backup is VMware backup and further it is added in next post that  "The exchange server i'm tryring to restore is the same server as the backup server." which confirms that the backup is remote agent (and Exchange agent) based backup. And GRT is supported for DAG, CCR, SCC, SCR, LCR and all clusters in Remote agent based backup.

Let me also explain what APP GRT is meant for:

APP GRT is used to backup applications like Exchange, SQL and Active directory running inside the VMware or Hyper-V virtual machines. Which means that you just backup the VM from under the ESX sever or Hyper-V server and in the restore you can restore the entire VM or restore inidividual items (GRT restore) like Exchange mails/mailboxes, SQL databases, or active directory objects.

So for VM's backup you have GRT + APP GRT. GRT is for individual files/folders restores from VM backup and APP GRT is for individual applications items (exchange, SQL, AD) from VM backup.

Thanks for clearing this up !

But the first post also mentions: Backup of the PASSIVE node, as I already said before I think the restore need to be done to the ACTIVE node, but I am not sure about this, maybe you can clearify this also.

It will not matter. However we need to know how is the restore being performed. Is this a normal restore or a redirected restore. If redirected restore then what is selected under the Exchange redirection tab. Based on that we can comment further.

Thanks.  That's exactly the problem i'm having.

Worked under 2010R2, how easy is it to go back to r2?

Thanks again

As far as I know there is no 'easy' way back to R2, only remove R3 completely and reinstall R2 from scratch.
This will also remove your catalogs, so you will have to inventory your tapes.

But you can also call Symantec Support and inform them about your issue.

BTW: Did you run LiveUpdate to install all available patches ?

Yes, installed all updates.

Do you know where I can get hold of the media for R2?

This will also remove your catalogs, so you will have to inventory your tapes.

I don't think the catalog schema has changed between R2 and R3, so the OP could save the \Catalogs dir to another location and then after the re-install, shut down the BE services and copy it back

And the inventory of "known" volume labels isn't kept in the catalog in any case, it is kept within the BEDB.  It would certainly be worth a try importing a saved copy of the R3 database into the R2 install using BEUTIL.  If if works great  If not, then nothing is lost and the OP can recreate his environment from scratch

Hi,

Have you try https://fileconnect.symantec.com/ ?

Need verification to login.

Thanks

Thanks but I only get a link to download R3.

I cannot find it online. (still have it on my laptop, but that won't help you)

Suggest to contact Syamantec for: or the download for 2010R2, or inform them about your issue, so they may be able to fix it in R3.
