Backing up to NAS device

Lance_Topping
Not applicable
We have BackupExec ver 8.0 and recently purchased a Dell NAS unit running Windows Storage Server 2003. We want to start sending our daily backups to the NAS device instead of tape and use the tape backup only for weekly and monthly backups for disaster recover purposes. Can this be done by setting up a drive pool in ver 8.0? It seems that we can backup to a local file on the machine where backup exec is running, but that we can't send the file to a destination anywhere else on the network like the NAS unit. Please help.

We just took the direct approach: turn the NAS into your backup server. This allows you to use the local NAS storage as a backup target, and you can attach the tape drive to the NAS for long-term by just duping the disk backups to tape. As long as you are running Windows Storage Server then BE has no problem running on it (at least 9.1 and higher work for me),you get better speed with fewer network hops and you have also eliminated a server thus reducing your complexity.

You might try iSCSI as well, but personally I would avoid that at this point. Simpler is better. You can always cross that bridge later if you need more capacity.

Hello,
This query concerns BE 8.0, hence is not posted in the correct forum. We will move this thread to the 8.x and prior versions forum, which unfortunately is not a moderated forum.
NOTE : If we do not receive your reply within two business days, this post would be marked assumed answeredand would be moved toanswered questions pool.

v8.6 was the first version that supported Backup-To-Disk.

To do what you want, you will need to upgrade. Veritas no longer sells v8 or v9, but you can usually find v9.x serials (work with either v9.0 or v9.1) on EBay or ISellSurplus.com
