Backing up to Removable drives

We are currently running Veritas 8.6 Rev 3808 which backs all data to a removable hard-drive (not my favourite)

We have 2 nightly backups which run, one is our exchange backup and the other is a data backup. Currently we have the option "Append to media, overwrite if no appendable media is available" set. However it seems our backups are not overwriting the old backups.

Is there an issue with removable drives? I'm thinking of moving it over to "overwrite media"

My second question is, I'm worried that the databackup is overwriting the exchange backup in terms of filename. Should I specify different locations within the drives? Like a exchange folder and a data folder?

Ok what I've done now is setup to backup folders within veritas both point to the removable drive but to different locations, Data and Exchange thus removing the possibility of overwriting one another. But still having the issue of backups not overwriting the same older ones.
