Backup Best Practices for selections

I am trying to understand what are the 'mandatory selections" for backup. In case I need to restore a Windows 2000/2003 server from scratch, which files are necessary to bring the server back online in a 'complete' state. My issue is that there is a lot of 'filler' that may not be necessary within a FULL backup

For example, do the following directories need backing up:
*\Recycler
*\Documents and Settings
*\Windows\NtServicePackUninstalls

Thanks for any insight!!

I usually exclude recycler, temp folders, any sourcefile folders (I usually maintain a \support folder where I keep all SPs or installed apps) and the pagefile.

Hello,

To recover the server you need the backup of the drives as well as (shadow copy components Win 2003) or (system state for Win 2000)

In addition please see the technote to resolve the issue:

An explanation of System State and Active Directory and the selection of System State for backup purposes

If you have any other question please revert.
