Backup Exec 10d (10.1 5629)

london

 Hi,

We have been using Backup Exec 10d (10.1 Revision 5629) for over 3 years. Over a long period of time we have had intermiitent input/output  Backup Exec error messages, such as:

Storage device "QUANTUM 1" reported an error on a request to read data from media.
Error reported:
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
V-79-57344-33992 - The backup storage device has failed.

Over the last few months, we have changed the external Quantum DLT-V4 SCSI tape drive, upgraded the Adaptec 29160 SCSI card to a 29320 SCSI card, changed the SCSI cable and terminators and Quantum tapes. I also slowed down the transfer rate in the SCSI BIOS.

The backups were fine for a few weeks, we then started to get the same i/o error messages again. At the moment we are using an external hard disk drive for our daily backups, until we resolve the issue with Backup Exec, the Quantum tape frive, the 29320 scsi card and cables.

We run a Dell 1800 Power Edge server. I have been in touch with Dell about this and they say that they have not tested the Quantum DLT-V4  drive nor Adaptec 29160 card. They suggest that we use the Adaptec 39160 SCSI card which they have tested on this server. Dell say they will change the motherboard to see if this resolves the problem.
Has anyone else come across a similar problem? And, if so, how did you resolve it?

Many thanks.

Sounds like an issue with the Controller, could be poor cabling, incorrect termination or transfer rate settings, lazy or slow device responses to relinquish the SCSI bus, a faulty device, or, in very rare cases, a poorly written device driver.
1. Make sure the latest Symantec device drivers are installed.
2. Perform tests after stopping the Removable Storage Management (RSM) service.
3. If the drive is connected to a SCSI RAID card, move the drive off to a separate SCSI card.

 Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I have been in touch with Quantum and they have escalated the case to Level 2. They suggest that we run the XTalk diagnostics again, which I will do next week.

We have Dell SATA Raid configured and a non-Raid integrated SCSI card.

There are a number of Event IDs: 5,7,9, and 11. They all mainly point to ADPU320 as the source.
