Backup Exec 12.0 remote agent for 2008 Server

Not applicable

I own licences for BEWS 12.0 and several windows remote agents. Until recently both the BEWS itself and the agents were running on Windows 2003 R2.

However one of the remote servers has just been replaced with a machine running Windows Server 2008 R2 x64.

I've found that pushing the agent installation from BEWS to the new server fails. Manual installation (using C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Agents\RAWSX64\setup.exe from the BEWS) also fails. It appears the version is not compatiable with 2008 R2 x64.

Is there any way I can protect the data on the new 2008 R2 server using the 12.0 licences I own, or do I have to purchase new ones? If so, what do I need to buy: just one agent, or everything again?

BE12.5 SP3 and above supports Win 2008R2.

Best supported by BE2010 R3.

Windows 2008R2 is not on the SCL of BE 12.0

You cannot install an agent BE2010 and backup with BE12.0

You need to upgrade the media server to 2010 (R3), normally you can use an agent 1 version back, so BE 2010(R3) is able to use an BE12.5 agent, but I recommend to upgrade all your agents to 2010.

If you are on a current maintenance contract, then you can upgrade to BE 2010 R3 for free.   You can download BE 2010 R3 from either the fileconnect site or www.backupexec.com.  You would need a new set of licence keys for BE 2010 R3 which can be obtained from licencing.symantec.com or from Symantec Licencing.  You can do an in-place upgrade of your BE 12 to BE 2010 R3 and thus retaining all your job settings.
