Backup Exec 12.5 service stops daily at 11am

bhben
Level 2

Hi, every day backup exec stops at 11am.

I have reinstalled Backup exec and reinstalled .net, neither have helped.

OS is Server 2008 Enterprise, SP2, 64bit

Just tried running liveupdate to check it's up to date and interestingly liveupdate states "LU1805: Liveupdate was unable to find any products to update"

Backups run overnight and are finished well before 11am.

Event viewer shows (not sure if the first two could be linked to the problem but they also show at the same time daily);

The Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v4.0.30319_X86 service entered the running state.

The Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v4.0.30319_X86 service entered the paused state.

The Backup Exec Job Engine service entered the stopped state.

The Backup Exec Agent Browser service entered the stopped state.

The Backup Exec Server service entered the stopped state.

The Backup Exec Device & Media Service service entered the stopped state.

The SQL Server (BKUPEXEC) service entered the stopped state.

...to fix that LiveUpdate error, check the TN below:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH153983

...do you perhaps have your BEDB maintenance running at 11am? Or is there any antivirus scan perhaps running at that time?

Thanks!

Thanks for comments.

CraigV I shall check out that liveupdate thread asap! No antivirus scans or similar running at that time. Cheers

@Jaydeep S

There is a SQL update that seems to be playing up. SP4 for SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (KB24663332)

The install is failing.

Oddly though if I check for updates using my wsus server it suggests i need the update, howevere if i check for updates online it doesn't.

I have tried downloading and installing manually but am having the same as before - wsus suggests i still need it.

When I ran the SQL2005 file it stopped the backup service, just as it does at 11am every day.

Should I uninstall sql 2005 and reinstall? Would it be best to uninstall backupexec and reinstall after the installation of sql 2005? sql 2008 is also on this machine.

Must just say, sql is really, really not my bag!!

Thanks

Hello bhben,

Please follow the steps in this technote and then install SP4 for SQL. Then your original issue will be resolved too.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH66134 : Microsoft Security Update (KB954606) for SQL server 2005 Service Pack 2, (KB970892) Service Pack 3 and (KB2463332) Service Pack 4 fails to patch the named Backup Exec (BKUPEXEC) SQL instance.

I can never install SP4 for SQL Express 2005 and I eliminated the problem by going to Windows Update and mark the SP as ignored

Hi Sush,

Thanks for info.

I've already tried that some time back though and I'm afraid it hasn't helped.

Ok, thanks for all comments.

Not sure why, but I never thought of updates and time they would run - yep - 11am!

Have declined SQL updates for now in wsus and expecting things to be better come 11am tomorrow.

Again, thanks for everyone's input.
