Backup Exec 2010 - Not recognising new LTO3 tapes

Routledge1982
Level 4

I have just replaced an HP LTO2 tape drive with an HP LTO3 tape drive on my server

I have inserted a brand new LTO3 tape into the drive

I have ran inventory

I have long erased the tape

I have labelled the tape

I have assigned it to a media set

On attempting to run a back up job, i get the message saying the media is written in an unrecogniseable format?

Any ideas what may be wrong and how i fix this?

many thanks

Have you tried a few passes of HP LTT against the drive?

If you are using the Symantec Drivers, have you tried HP drivers?

hi thanks for the reply

i made a mistake in my first post

I have upgraded from LTO2 to LTO4, however i am using LTO3 tapes (as my live server uses LTO3)

I am just about to install the HP drivers from this link and will attempt that

Still worth a pass of LTT against the drive

Do you have any LTO4 media at all?  perhaps one that came with the drive?  If so, do you get the same results with that tape?

LTO4 should be able to read/write LTO3 media.  You may need to contact either HP or whoever you have a maint contact with if LTT shows errors

Hi,

Have you manually moved the tapes to the Scratch media set?

Thanks!

hi there,

i dont have LT04 tapes. My live server uses LTO3 tape drive, and my disaster recovery server uses LT0 4 tape drive. This is the reason i wanted to test an LTO3 tape

i moved the tapes to a media set called "monday" and associated the job with the monday media set

im totally stumped :(

From your earlier post, from the time-out message, it would appear that there is something wrong with your hardware connection to the library.  As previously advised, run the HP LT&T utility against the library.  Make sure that you select the write test and that you stopped all the BE services before running the utility.

...move them to the Scratch media set manually and see if this changes the status of the tape itself.

Ken's suggestion is a good 1...HP LTT will show any sort of issues being experienced.

Also consider updating the firmware, and make sure it is connected to a supported SCSI controller.

THanks!

...any HDDs in your server that have failed, or are in prefailure? Can you confirm this on your server's hardware monitoring page?

Routledge1982

there is one hard drive that has an orange flashing light? does that mean it has failed?

most likely, yes. Your server would be in degraded mode. HP server HDDs would flash a red LED, but you don't mention which 1 you have...
