KIndly can some one help me in the below issue..

I am not able to backup virtual machines through my Vcenter server which is a windows virtual machine...but when I specify ESX servers directly in backup specification it works..it gives this error.

A communications failure has occurred with a Virtual Machine resource..

Can some one also inform me about the prerequsites to backup VM through SAN as when I do that it gets failed...do my Backup exec machines have to see the LUN from the SAN where vm datacenter is...what should be my san zoning to perfom this task or is there any other settings to be configured..

Yes, to be able to do a SAN based backup with the AVVI agent, your Backup Exec server needs access to the VMFS LUNS. On the storage processor you will need to ad the WWN number(s) of the FC HBAs to the Vmware LUNs. For zoneing, add the Backup Exec FC HBAs and Storage Processors WWNs in one zone.

Make sure to run automount disable and automount scrub first on the Backup Exec server.

The Backup Exec service account needs to have the correct rights, see this technote:

Thanks for your reply I will check this with our storage person, but kindly assist me why the vm backup is not working from v center over the LAN but it is working with ESX servers directly..is there any permission issue with the account I am using..

Can be a permissions problem, but you can also try the NBD transport method option, this will create a backup of the lan (ethernet) and will prove if your account has enough rights, but will be slower.

What exact version of vSphere and BE are you using ?
