Backup Exec 2010 authenticated SMTP email notifications fail

I have Backup Exec 2010 set up with gmail for email notifications.  It does not work.  I have no access to any other SMTP server or Exchange server.  I use the same gmail account on the same server to send email notifications from SQL Server and it works fine, so nothing on the server is blocking the emails from being sent.

I have read many articles which say that older versions of BE do not support SMTP email accounts that require authentication, which gmail does.  I cannot find anything that says whether this issue has been resolved for 2010 or not.

Nothing works - test email or actual notifications.

If anyone knows anything about BE 2010 and the status of this known bug, please point me in the right direction.

Thanks very much!

Well, I guess that answers my question.  How Symantec can have a known issue like this for at least 3 years (probably longer) and not address it is beyond my comprehension.  I have no alternative ways to send email, so there is no workaround for me.  What a disappointment.

Out of interest as GMAIL apparently uses port 587 for SMTP, did you change this from the default of Port 25 when configuring the SMTP mail server details in Backup Exec.

Other than that subject to final details on release Backup Exec 2012 should allow Authenticated SMTP to gmail and other ISP mail servers.
