Since upgrading to BE 2012, the Virtual disk service (VDS stops every mornign at 4am. This causes disk to disk folders and deduplciation folders to go off line. Subsequent disk to disk etc backups fail, as the drives are off line. The deduplication folders cannot be brought on line and require all BE services to be restarted to bring them on line.
The only reference I have been able to find about this problem refers to Netbackup 7 and so is not relevant.
Note that BE 2012 is installed with all current updates.

4 a.m. is when BE does its own database maintenance. Click on the BE button and then select BE setting. Change the database maintenance time to some other time and see what happens.

Thanks pkh:)
Unfortunately it does not matter what the DB maintenance time is set for, as it still kicks all relevant drives off line:(
However, there is a hotfix available for it which I will request.
