Hello,

Please refer to the following document to check what file version for the dll´s mentioned get changed, if the service pack has been applied or not.

http://support.veritas.com/docs/275399

After going through the document run the Backup Exec diagnostic utility.

Please refer the following technote:

http://support.veritas.com/docs/251779

After running the diagnostic utility a text file will be created "Bediag.txt".

Refer to the text document and check if the files mentioned in the release notes have changed.

Rucha,

This link http://support.veritas.com/docs/275399 does NOT show anything about any dll's. It only describes the problems that are fixed. It does not list any files. Thank you, come again.

Yep, I've seen that document. The original question at the top was "How do you find out what service pack is installed."

which probably means they're trying to find out if they any have any service packs before SP4a installed. Just like me.

So where are the documents similiar to this one http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/280008.htm that show the FILES that are changed with service packs 2 and 3?

I found this one http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/267690.htm that helps with identifying if SP 1 is installed.Message was edited by:

ok, I ran the diagnostic tool and here are some files and their versions on my system.

beserver.exe 9.1.4691.51
bengine.exe 9.1.4691.49
beremote.exe 9.1.4691.49
bkupexec.exe 9.1.4691.48

Judging from these documents:

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/267690.htm - SP1

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/279308.htm - SP4

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/280008.htm - SP4a

and some other files listed in the documents I'm pretty sure I have a service pack higher than 1 but less than 4.

So do I have 2 or 3 ? I still cannot find a document showing file changes for service packs 2 or 3.Message was edited by:

Hi Jess,

I never found these myself.

If in doubt- apply SP4a, then you will know you're running exactly SP4a.

Does SP4a install properly now, without the need for registry hacking ?

I was looking into updating to 4a and among the documents -- document ID: 279747 -- I found something about having to make sure serivce packs 3 or 4 are installed first to get 4a to install correctly. I've come to the point where I'm setting up another server to install BE on and install service packs to see the files that are changed and compare versions, but now I don't know if I can find any of the previous service packs to download and install in a test environment. I don't think they offer up the previous service packs for download.

This is out of the topic of this thread but I was wondering if anyones used and deployed the backup program built into MS Server 2003. I'm starting to wonder what's the point of paying for an unsupported backup software if the one I've already paid for, i.e. built-in, will do the job.Message was edited by:

No, SP1 through 3 have been pulled

If you are setting up a new server, just install the base code, then install SP4a

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/280008.htm

directly over the base code. You do NOT need any previous service installed, and in fact the SP4/4a install chokes if any SPs or HotFixes are installed

I am NOT setting up a new server for production. We already have a 2K server up and running with Backup Exec on it. I am setting up another server ONLY to test the Backup Exec upgrade to 4a. We have service pack 1 saved here on disk, but none of the others. Was going to install BE on it, look at file versions, install sp1, look at file versions and compare them to the documents I've found -- see above posts -- and see if I can figure out what Service Pack is installed on our production server that is up and running with Backup Exec already.

The part where you say SP4/4a chokes if any previous SP's are installed is exactly why I'm trying to find out exactly what SP is installed on our 2K server before we install 4a.

We were entertaining the idea of installing SP 4a onto our 2K server that is currently running BE to hopefully fix various issues with Backup Exec we are having.

There is a TechNote with two work arounds for the SP4a failure to install.

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/279747.htm

One is to basically uninstall and reinstall a vanilla V9.1 (A link to another TechNote provided), the other involves some registry diving. Neither particularly welcome on a production machine, but both do work.

I found Service Packs 2 and 3, installed BE 9.1 on my test server and proceeded to install service packs 2 and 3 and running the diagnostic tool after installing each service pack to compare file versions.

Here are a couple -- not all -- file version changes and their the service packs that change them:

Service Pack 2 changed files
bengine.exe - 9.1.4691.42
beremote.exe - 9.1.4691.35

Service Pack 3 changed files
bengine.exe - 9.1.4691.49
beremote.exe - 9.1.4691.49
beserver.exe - 9.1.4691.51

So I do have Service Pack 3 installed

Hope this info helps some other peeps.
