Backup Exec UNC discovery before backup

tcube

Good Morning,

I am using Backup Exec 2010 for one of my clients. Their current configuration has 3 NAS Devices that are swapped out about every 2 hours with backups that run every half hour. Is there a way to force Backup Exec to do a UNC discovery to determine which drive is online before the backups run?

Current Scenario is as follows:

1) Backups run to NAS Drive 1

2) NAS Drive 1 is unplugged and NAS Drive 2 is connected to the network

3) Backup Exec still sees NAS Drive 1 as online, and NAS Drive 2 as offline

4) Backups Fail due to trying NAS Drive 1

You can't do it within BE, but try setting up a CMD file that you execute via Windows Task Scheduler to run a BEMCMD job to pause and then unpause all of the devices in the pool

This should flag the one that is connected as active and BE should then use thata B2D folder

You can Run Inventory on the B2D when the NAS drives are swapped. Also target the jobs to Device Pool.

There is no auto UNC discovery. You could try to setup, 3 B2D folders pointing to the NAS devices and setup a Device Pool.

Hi tcube,

Give pkh's article a read on the link below and see if this is relevant to your situation:

Thanks!

The drives are set in a device pool but the same issue occurs. If the drive shows offline under the normal B2D folder, it shows offline in the device pool. We need a way for backup exec to reach out and basically ping these NAS devices before a backup to determine which is online and which is offline.

Well, the current version of Backup Exec does not have this functionality what you are asking for.

If you think that this functionality will be helpful to have in Backup Exec then you may write your IDEA in the Idea section on this Forum. Here is the link for it.

If there any many users who feels this funtionality is helpful then Symantec will try to consider it in the next major release,

Thanks,
