There is no media server support for the Xeon 64 on V10 either? IS Veritas just becoming aware of this now after the Xeon 64 platforms were announced to begin shipping almost a year ago?

Does Veritas know that ArcServe has and supports EM64T Xeons and IA64 in all it's backup products, and NOT forcing it's customers to upgrade if they need a compatible agent?

And they offer competitive upgrade pricing...

Hello Stephan,

We apologise for the belated Reply.

As Brad says 64 bit machine is supported by Veritas Backupexec, but by a Remote Agent. You cannot perform the basic Backupexec Installation on a 64-bit machine.
You can go through the following Articles as well:
Symantec Backup Exec 10d (10.1) for Windows Servers - Software Compatibility List (SCL) http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/278254.htm

10d (10.1.5629) Hotfix 1 - Extended 64-bit (x64) Remote Agent for Windows Servers (RAWS) (Adds support for remote computers running 64-bit extended chipset Windows operating systems) http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/280701.htm

How to install and uninstall the 64-bit remote agent for Windows servers to remote Windows computers using the command line http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/275657.htm

Backup Exec for Windows Servers cannot be installed on 64-bit computer systems.

This is disturbing to say the least OR it's a bad joke.

It is my opion that we should not have to submit a product enhancement to enable the largest backup software to run on the most widely used OS in the world.

I realize that the X64 version is not as popular as the 32 bit version, but come on....penalized for being more advanced?

Does anyone know if Symantec plans to support the Windows x64 platform any time soon, if at all? I got a brand new Dell server that I'll eventually need to run Backup Exec on, and if Symantec won't support x64, then I might have to look into another vendor, while I still have a chance.

All the replies that Symantec keeps posting refer to 64-bit support for remote agents, but that's just seems like a standard company response, without any substance.

This is very disappointing. Exchange 12 is requiring 64 Bit and it will be out next year. The new windows storage server we just bought comes with 64bit standard. And the only other server we have is just plain old, which is why we just bought 2 new servers.

Veritas, get your act together please!

Are there any updates on support for 64-bit? We are in the same boat here, we started to get into 64-bit hardware to find out that BackupExec is not supported as a media server.

Does Symantec have any time line for 64-bit for Media Servers?

BE 11d will indeed amongst support 64-bit OS (Media Server) installation. Other new features will include NDMP and additional OS & application support I believe BE11d will be out in Q4.

Any prizes for guessing that this will not be a free upgrade?
