Backup Exec job stops - Remote agent for Windows license running out of test period

We have a very strange problem on two different Windows servers with the Backup exec 12.5.

These are the two configuration with the same problem:

HP Server ML350
2x 146GB SAS HDD RAID1
HP DAT160 Backup Tape
Windows SBS2003 standard 32-bit german
Backup Exec 12.5 for SBS (SP2)
SBS server as the only Domain controller, no other servers attached

HP Server ML350
3x 146GB SAS HDD RAID5
HP DAT160 Backup Tape
Windows SBS2008 premium 64-bit german
Backup Exec 12.5 for SBS (SP2)
SBS server as the only Domain controller, no other servers attached, no virtual servers configured

On both servers we installed the BE ( like it was recommended at the setup procedure without any additional clienst or options) and setup the backup job. Everything was running fine. Suddenly the one server (SBS2003) stops the backup job with an error "E00081CE - The software evaluation period has expired"!
After this we had a look to the license information, where we found the "Remote agent for windows license" was expired!
We never installed it nor do we have another server in the same network!
On the second server (SBS2008) we had a look after this problem on the first customer and found a similar situation:
At the license information there is also a "Remote agent for Windows server" entry and the count is on day 20 of 60!

Does anyone have an idea what do to with this strange errors??

With backup exec version 12 onwards you can evaluate each and individual  option for a period of 60 day . If you dont install backup exec remote agent license and try to backup a remote server it would automatically  install the remote agent in evaluation for 60 days . So you either need to remove the remote server from the selection list or need to add aremote agent license in you backup exec .

Hi ,

we do not have any kind of remote server in these networks!
Only the SBS2003/2008 standalone server with BE 12.5 SBS version installed.
In the selection lists you can only find this server resources for backup andno other remote windows systems.

Anyways if you are not backing up any remote server you can just ignore the alert about the evaluation . May be you might have tried  backing up a remote server or just some files from the remote server  for a testing purpose which would have installed the agent in Evaluation ..

as the Backup jobs stops after the trial period with error "E00081CE - The software evaluation period has expired"
As stated before, we do not have any other servers in these networks only the SBS2003/2008 standalone.
We tried to remove and reinstall the BE on the server, but as before the trial period was starting to run again!
So now we have day 3 of 60 at the "Remote agent for WIndows systems".
The only thing we did was updating the backup job by RDP from a remote PC.
But no agents installed anywhere.

Does  your Backup exec show in evaluation or Just remote agent show in evaluation ? 
IF it is the complete backup exec pogram which is showing in eval then it would stop your backup job . If it is remote agent which is showing in eval then it is not an issue as u are not backing up remote a server . Only the remote server backup will stop in this case, but if u are not backing up any remote server then it should not have any effect .

when you have a look at the screenshots (sorry, all in German) you can see that:

  • product is registered fully (SBS2003)
  • the backup was definately not executed before reinstalling
  • after new installation the counter of the trial was started again (Remote agent for windows)

Are the backup running fine at the moment ?? Check the selection list once again if any remote resourse is been selected for backup ...if the backup are faillign let me know what excatly the error you have int he job

the backup job is running without any problems.

attached you can see the selection list (SBS2003 C-drive, SQL-database, Servername: Server, systemstate)

but in 3 days the trial will expire again, I will keep you up-to-date on this

Can you also post a screenshot of the "About" window and the Installed licenses?
Can you also tell us what is the title bar of the backup exec? (trial period, evaluation or nothing)?

It seems that you have an issue with your licenses.

find attached the screenshot for the "about" window (in German) and the recent "installed licenses" (also in German) where you can see it is now day 59 of 60 (yesterday, day 58 of 60).
On the title bar there is nothing else than the header and the just opened window.

license concerns, on both servers (SBS2003 and SBS2008) we installed the SBS premium edition, and also the Symantec BE SBS premium edition (with Exchange and SQL agents included)

Hi again,

take a look at this document (after page 7)
eval.symantec.com/mktginfo/enterprise/fact_sheets/b-datasheet_backup_exec_12_sbs_02-2008_12001749-1....

I think that the license for RAWS is not included on the SBS license. Check with your reseller.
But,
Try to change the selection. Do not use the "favorite Resources" but check directly the server on the top of the selection list.

thank you very much for this information.
As I say it is very strange!
On both servers the RAWS is running as a service.
We had an installation looking the same 3 months ago, there is also a RAWS running as a service but not showed at the licenses.
The only difference bettween the running configuration and the two others is, that on the working one SP2 is not installed yet!
