Hello Experts!

Here is my scenario:

I have a file server, and I want to install backup exec software on that server so that I can backup the files on that server,  my storage is tape drive.

Question:

Can I backup the File server? or Do I need another server just to backup my file server?

Also I want to know how Backup Exec can replicate data to tape?

Hi there,

It's called duplicating data. Replicating is an array technology.

You can do different kinds of duplication of data...tape-to-tape, disk-to-tape, tape-to-disk etc.

For you to be able to do a tape-to-tape duplication, you'd need either 2 standalone drives, 2 autoloaders/libraries, or 2 tape drives in an autoloader/library.

You'd then create a stage to duplicate between devices. The TN below refers to BE 2012, but should still be relevant for BE 2014. If not, just post back here...

You can also duplicate between media servers, but then you'd need a license for Enterprise Server Option in order to do so.

Thanks!

You can install BE on the File server and take backup of the entire server (System State + All Drives)

Also I want to know how Backup Exec can replicate data to tape?

Could you elobrate your query about repliacte data to tape.

Hi thanks for your reply

I want to replicate the data on my file server after my backup, I know that backup exec can replicate, but I'm not sure if its the backup data or the whole data itself. Also I've read that its best practice is on Disk, but we must use Tape for relocating the data on other site.

To install BE on the file server, check the SCL to make sure that the OS is supported.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH217478

If the file server is a NAS, you would most probably not be able to install BE in it.

If the OS is not supported, then you need to setup another server with a supported OS, install BE on that and use it to backup the file server.

You would need to connect the tape drive/library to the machine on which you install BE.  Once done, you can backup straight to tape.  Check the HCL below to make sure that it is supported.
