Backup Mailboxes and Stores okay?

I'm running Exchange 2003 with the Exchange add-on option for BE 9.1
I'm backing up both the individual mailboxes and information stores. Do I also need to backup the contents of the \exchsrvr\mddata directory as well?

If you want to be able to do a full Disaster Recovery - Yes

If you are willing to restore the OS, and then re-install Exchange, then patch it to match the current level, then no, you don't need to.

Also, be aware that if you ever do need to do a Disaster Recovery DO NOT use your Mailbox backup, Do the Stores restore only.Message was edited by:

What a pain. That's a lot of data I was hoping to avoid backing up. So I have this correct I need to backup the individual mailboxes, information stores and physical files?
thanks,
Carlton.

Mailbox backups are a bonus for selected, high profile users, as far as I am concerned. Restores are better in v9, but still not guaranteed. and they take an enormous amount of time and tape to do, compared to Stores backups

See http://mail.tekscan.com/nomailboxes.htm for a discussion of why you may not want to do mailbox backups at all. it is a little dated now, but the philosophy is still sound.

Hello,

You may like to refer to the following technote to know more about protecting Exchange 2003 server using Backup Exec v9.1:

How to protect Exchange 2000 and 2003 servers using the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Exchange Agent

Hope this helps you.
