Backup Shadow Copy Component very slow

Hi, I'm using BE version 10 on W2003 SP, backup media is a USB external HD.

Sometimes when we start working in the morning we can't access the server. If we log into the server we see that the backup on SCC is still running for 8 hours.
After reboot we can work again fine.

The strange thing is that there is no regular in it.

Has someone any suggestions please?

Hello,

Elaborate on the following points so as to better analyse the problem:

- Are you also backing up any other data alongwith the Shadow copy components?
- since when does the problem occur? You have mentioned that it occurs randomnly, but is there any pattern as to when it occurs? (every 2 days, once a week or so??)
- Do you get any errors in the event logs?
- what is the amount of data backed up?
- are the other backup running at a better speed?

Try out the following steps to resolve the problem:

- Try to backup on another device and check if the speed improves
- Run a defrag of the system using the steps suggested in the technote below:

How to correct slow backup performance, slow virus or pre-job scans, and agent initialization problems on fragmented Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows 2003 server partitions http://support.veritas.com/docs/237444

- alternatively you can try the same backup using the Windows backup utility NTbackup and test the results.

Hope this helps. If the problem persists, revert with the details on above questions.
