I am considering using the vmware agent to backup multiple vm's or the whole esx host and all vm's. I have noticed that snapshots are automatically created when you do vm or esx host backups. These snapshots can cause mandatory snapshot consolidation prompts from vmware from time to time. When this happens, you have to call vmware to circumvent the mandatory prompt. Or do the consolidation which takes a very long time in many cases. Is there a way to avoid these snapshots from being taken?

This KM describes how to configure the automatic removal of snapshots and cleanup of any orphan snapshots so that there should not be an issue with residue snapshots see: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH200709

No. There is no way to avoid these snapshots which are needed so that the VM's are backed up in a consistent state.
