I see this error mentioned in the following technote:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH66532

one of the solution says it was resolved in a post BE 12.5 SP2 hotfix. If you are already on a higher service pack level for BE 12.5, you can ignore this. Else, I recommend you update your media server to the lates service pack and hotfix and attempt a backup again.

Is the backup failing with an error that reads 'Catastrophic failure' ONLY or an error that further reads some issues related to Volume ShadowCopy Service(VSS)? If it related to VSS then under the 'backup job properties' > Advanced Open File Option > Select Microsoft Volume ShadowCopy Service(Windows Server 2003 and later) option and then from the drop down(for Snapshot provider), you need to select 'System- Use Microsoft ShadowCopy Provider'. Alternatively, you may refer to the following link: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH173983
