Backup performance issue of Exchange 2003

Windows Server 2003 box w/ Exchange server 2003. I am using a Dell PowerVault LTO-2-L Tape Drive connected via SCSI 160 PCI card.

When backing up the local drives, information store, etc the drive throughput rate is between 190-900 MB/min. When backing up the Exchange mailboxes or public folders the throughput rate is between 25-.05 MB/min.

Why is the performance degraded when backing up Exchange?? Why is the drive able to backup the information store at 900 MB/min but the local drives, Utility Partitions, SRS Storage etc only backup around 190-300 MB/min??

This comes up over and over again.

The Kludge that Veritas came up with to provide brick-level backups is EXTREMELY inefficient. Since there are no APIs to backup mailboxes, what BackupExec does is logon to Outlook, attach to each selected mailbox and then open and read each item using standard MAPI calls.

See http://mail.tekscan.com/nomailboxes.htm to decide uif you really want to do brick level backups in the first place

Remember also that if you need to do a disaster recovery, that your brick level backup is worthless, you will HAVE to have a stores backup.
