Thank you CraigV
During further research into this matter I stumbled over this (now) 2 day old link and I can see it is the same issue for me. If symantec Support wants to get in touch they are welcome, else I will keep looking for a fix, hopefully soon.

Exchange 2010 GRT (Granular Restore Technology) restore fails with an error "0xe00002fe - Cannot log on to MAPI with the specified credentials"

Hi Lars,
Are you using AOFO, and if so, turn it off. Run a backup, and then try the restore again.
You can also try staging the restore to disk manually yourself before doing the restore from disk. Read the article below:
https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/restoring-exchange-or-individual-mailboxesitems-using-backup-exec-howto |
As for the error message you're receiving, check the TN below if you haven't already done so...

Thanks!

Do you have MAPI/CDO installed on the Exchange server ?
It is a requirement for individual mail items restore.

@CraigV
It is disabled.
@ZeroC00l
I remember reading about the MAPI/CDO thing, and I see it is no longer part of a default post Exchange 2007 installatoin. However, I did not install it back then, since it was in production and I wanted to wait. Since then, I forgot (or thought I had).
Sounds very promising, and I will give it a go and report back if it is a succes.
Kind Regards
Lars

With BE 2010 backing and restoring Exchange 2010 MAPI/CDO is not used at all. So its not needed to be installed.
Have you installed SSL certificate on the Client Access Server (CAS) server of Exchange? If possible can you disable the SSL certificates of Exchange on the CAS server and then try the restore.... (This is just a troubleshooting step as this error is usually when connecting from CAS)
Let us know the result of restore about disabling SSL certificates then we can check other steps.
Thanks,
-Sush...

Hello Sush
Yes, the MAPI/CDP install did not change the situation.
There are several certificates on the Client Access Server I have disabled the one valid for IIS, since I reckon that must be for SSL and verified OWA now yielded an error of a missing SSL certificate.
Yet the restore still has the same error, also in SGMON.
SSL for IIS is now enabled again.
Kind Regards
Lars

If you have a valid support contract, I suggest you to contact Symantec. You may help them with further investigating/troubleshooting this issue.
