I am seeing a very strange job log for a server that has VSS turned off in the job settings. Why is it reporting this pointless error message to me?
The selections for this job have changed since the last time it ran.
Backup- \\SERVER.ourdomain.internal\D:FIPS 140-2 compliant software encryption is enabled.
BackupV-79-57344-34086 - Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on: "\\SERVER.ourdomain.internal\C:". Snapshot technology used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot technology error (0xE0008526): Backup Exec could not locate a Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) software or hardware snapshot technology for this job. Select a valid VSS snapshot technology for the target computer.
Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.
Backup- \\SERVER.ourdomain.internal\C:FIPS 140-2 compliant software encryption is enabled.
,
But if we look in the job settings...
Advanced Open File
"[ ] Use snapshot technology" is unchecked

Since Windows 2003, VSS is used by backup operations irrespective of open file settings, as that is the way Microsoft implemented file system backup functionality within the file systrems of the newer operating systems. This resulted in third party backup software (such as Backup Exec) using the VSS method going forwards. Before Windows 2003 if you disabled open file in Backup Exec the snapshot driver, be that VSS or legacy, was not used.
As such the Open File technology no longer disables using VSS, all it does is disable the open file ability, however, VSS is still used in the background.
You will therefore continue to see VSS errors unless you resolve the underlying issues with VSS.
