Continous Protection Server (CPS): Questions

Hi,

We are considering CPS as replication software for the company and do have few questions:
  • Is it possible to protect workstations as well? If not, which Symantec product does support that?
  • When replicate branch servers to HQ, how to pre-stage data to avoid pulling over WAN more than 200GB? Do we need to preserve NTFS permissions in this case?
  • Do we need to buy a license per server?
Thank you in advance,
Regards,
Dmitry

CPS is not intended for workstations due to it's client agent cost of around $400.  You would want to use either DLO (an option in BackupExec) or BackupExec System Recovery desktop edition.

There is no way to pre-stage with CPS.  WIth the upcoming BE2010 release and deduplication you could do remote backups, and pre-stage your data...

CPS is given away with BackupExec.  Each remote agent for windows you purchase for BackupExec, also entitles you to use it instead with CPS.  You cannot buy CPS alone as far as I know.

Hi teiva-boy,

Thank you for your replay.

Yes, it is a shame we can't
  1. pre-stage data (this makes CPS useless for remote protection)
  2. buy CPS as separate product as we already use ArcServe, I am afraid
  3. use CPS as all-in-one protection for servers and PCs

To sum up, looks like not quite right product for us.

Although, I am trialing CPS as separate product (this is odd, you can downnload it but can't buy!) and I like it!

Dmitry
