Crossupgrade to Backup Exec 2012

Hi there,

I have to replace a server (which is currently running fine, it's just old) with Backup Exec 2010 R3 installed. What are the steps I should follow to keep the jobs and catalogs and get them converted to 2012?

Can I simply install 2012 on the new server, copy the "Catalogs" and "Data" folders into the BE 2012 program folder after Installation of BE2012 on the new server and run the migration tool? If yes, how is it called and what parameters should I use?

Kind Regards,

Christian

Hi

Ans:

Please ensure you that you cannot simply copy paste the data and catalogs as it would require migration to be done

Please follow the steps

1 Install BE 2012 on new server & then copy data and catalog on desktop of new machine.

2 Then by stopping the Sql service please take the backup of data and catalog of new BE 2012 ,as if something goes wrong you don't have to uninstall the S/W

There are a lot of changes between BE 2010 and BE 2012.  It would be better to upgrade the existing BE 2010, rather than just copying the Data and Catalogs directory to BE 2012.  After the upgrade, you can then install BE 2012 on your new server and copy the Data and Caralogs directories from the upgaded BE 2012 to the new BE 2012.

You need to stop SQL server BKUPEXEC service and make a copy of the DATA & CATALOGS

folder. Refer to PKH's  blog on upgrading and migrating to BE2012

Although the current documentation does not preclude migrating to BE 2012 by copying Data and Catalog directories.  I would caution against this method of moving to BE 2012 because the underlying structure of BE 2012 is vastly different from that of previous versions of BE.  Read this discussion and Colin Weaver's answer which he says that the current documentation may have to be adjusted.
