DLT III permanent erase and still use

I have Backup Exec 10 and have several DLT III tapes that I want to permanently erase but still want to place the tapes back into use at another facility. I am using a Quantum DLT 8000 drive. Will "long erase" permanently erase all data on the tape (with no chance of recovery)?

Hello,

Please refer to the following technote to know about Quick erase and Long erase:

What is a quick erase / long erase and when should it be carried out?

Hope this helps you.

If I perform a Long Erase, I need to be assured that nothing can be recovered from the tape. Can you provide me an answer to this? Thanks.

As long as the tape physically exists and is intact, if someone wants the data badly enough, they can get to it.

Using Long Erase, standard access (BackupExec or NTBackup or any utility that reads and writes MTF) - cannot recover the data, but specially written code on special equipment probably still can.

(I saw a study where the NSA was reliably reading disk data after 10 passes of DOD class erasure. 'Course they ARE the NSA) :)
