We are trying to use the dedupe option to back up a server over the wan.  Has anyone done this?

Dedup over the WAN is not a good option, any packet drop will cause the backups to halt.

How fast is your WAN link and how many data is on the remote server(s) ?

While you can do it, it's not 100% reliable...  As Amol pointed out a single dropped packet will cause the job to fail.

Though in most modern countries, packet loss is usually <1%, so you would just keep re-trying the job and pray it finishes before it happens.  This is why NetBackup has a checkpoint restart feature, to pick up last where the checkpoint was created (e.g. every 15min, 30 min, etc)

Doable yes!  Plauged with uncertainty, sadly...  yes!
