Deleting media from B2D folders

Hi All,
 
If I move media to the Retired media group, then delete it, it is then gone from the BE records, correct?
 
But it doesn't delete the actual media files, so can I just go ahead and do this? Do I need to stop the services first or anything?

Correct

Delete them at will, you do not need to stop the services.
