Directory could not be found or accessed error

Hi I have an unusual issue as follows. Veritas Backup Exec 10 with SP5 applied

All Data to be backed up is located on a separate partition on the Hard Disk (D:\Squires & Co). No Windows components are included in the backup. The backup is successful in backing up the Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes, however it is not successful backing up any of the data in D:\Squires & Co folder. It fails all the time with the error “Directory could not be found or accessed, None of the contents will be backed up. I have referred to the Knowledge base yet none of the documents are either not relevant or not applicable to this scenario. Note that I have removed any restrictions on the folders to be backed up and the Credentials Check within Backup Exec are successful.

Steps taken so far

1.       Added Desktop & Laptop Agent Licence

2.       Restarted BackupExec Services

3.       Attempted Backup of one folder from d:\squires & co on the D (Local) Drive

4.       Failed with result Directory could not be found or accessed

5.       Attempted Backup of one file from d:\squires & co

6.       Failed with result Directory could not be found or accessed

7.       Created Backup To Disk Folder

8.       Attempted Backup of one folder from d:\squires & co to Backup to Disk Folder

9.       Failed with result Directory could not be found or accessed

10.   Attempted Backup of one file from d:\squires & co to backup to Disk Folder

11.   Failed with result Directory could not be found or accessed

12.   Downloaded & Installed Service Pack 5 for Veritas BackupExec 10.0

13.   Restarted Server

14.   Attempted backup of one folder from d:\Squires & Co

15. Attempted to use NTBackup.EXE and it will backup to a disk

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you've covered most everything.

If you logon to the Media Server as the BackupExec Service account, can you map this share/see this direrctory in Windows Explorer?

We are getting this same error as well now.   We upgraded to SQL 2005 SP2 and it started on this SBS 2003 box.  The odd thing is we can backup the system state, or a database, or exchange.  We just can not backup the C:\ or the D:\ without getting this error.

This has been killing me.

SBS 2003 SP2.
Backup Exec 10.0 SP5.

I still have not resolved this problem, but I have identified the problem. It is definately related to SQL software that was applied recently, it seems to be interfering with the MSSQL$ service that BackupExec puts on when you go through the initail installation.

I have tried stopping the services of the additional SQL software, but of course that only makes the problem worse. I think the reason that the Exchange Mailboses backup works is because of the Exchange Agent, probably uses different technology than the standard backup (however this is a supposition of mine).

I have given up now and have ordered an upgreade to BackupExec 11d with a maintenance contract, which will either work or it won't. If it doesn;t this is why I have opted to include support and maintenance, I can get on the phone to a specialist who should be able to resolve the issue.

Whatever the result I will post my findings when I have them, approx 1 week from now. Just waiting on the symantec licence code for the software.

I myself have spent 2 days trying to solve this problem. I finally came accross the following resolution off of a russian versitas support forum. I have done this update and successfully resovled this issue. 10.0 Serials still work with this 10.d version.
"

Take the Symantec Veritas 10d build 5629 + sp1 + hotfix and all will work. 10.0.Update will be free to use the same keys as 10.0. 10d.Agents only need to update the same after the change of 10.0 to 10d.

I have upgraded BackupExec to version 11d and the problem is now resolved. Note that there is a 60-day evaluation version of 11d available to download for free. (Using until my Symantec Licence code arrives) When asked for registration keys just click next. You can use it for 60 days and then of you want to continue you must buy licence keys for each of the different features that are available in the software (Remote Agents/Agent for MS Exchange/SQL/Lotus etc).

Sorry but this is only for 32-BIT Windows Servers. I don't have the URL for any other platform

The URL for the free evalution is http://www4.symantec.com/Vrt/offer?a_id=30140

Hope this is of use to everyone
