Hi,
I'm trying to simulate a complete meltdown of our file server and would would like to know if you have any step-by-step walkthroughs? I have started with installing a Windows server 2008 R2. I have download the only version I could find, a trial Backup Exec 2012. (We hare using Exec 2010).
Is this a good aproach?
Best,
Jon

Are you performing DR of a Backup Exec Media server or a Remote server?
Download link of BE2010 R3

It should not be an issue if you are using BE 2012 to restore your file server. However if in case you face any issue while DR procedure, it would be comparatively difficult to isolate the issue. So best would be try doing DR using BE 2010 first.
You can refer below documents to do DR of your file server.(assuming its a remote server and not BE server)
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH86323
http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO23134
http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO11946
Also check if you have protected your server using IDR. If yes, you can try to recover using IDR too. OR else, manual DR would be an option for you.

Hi
Thanks, I have already installed Exec 2012 though
Do you have any suggestions on what todo now? I have connected the USB drive with a complete copy of the other server.
Should I create a Media source? I dont want to accidentially delete the backup on the USB drive
Best,
Jon

Hi,
Thanks for your reply,
It is not a Remote computer. It is file backup of all our files on the same server.
Best,
Jon

Procedure would be similar to http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH56671 .
Make sure you dont erase or overwrite data on your USB.(i.e. backup set)
If you are new to BE 2012, then it might take time for you to explore options before you actually run a restore.
Please refer Admin Guide of BE 2012 which might be helpful.http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5211

As far as possible you should always use the same version of BE to restore your backup. You might want to look at IDR to automate your recovery process.
