Disk base backup requirements

Greetings,

We are considering moving from our tape based system to a disk based system. So fare we like what we see, but need to know about space requirements.
Can anyone tell me where I can find information on what kind of space I might need for CPS on standard file servers? Exchange and SQL would be helpful too. I am specifically interested in finding out how long I can keep snapshots, what the overheard will be for keeping these as long as possible. I understand this is a moving target and every environment is different, but there has to be some basics as to how to scale your disk based backups.

as the restrict of VSS, you can keep no more than 64 snapshots, if the hard disk space was used up, the oldest snapshot will be deleted automatically, you can define the retension period for these snapshots either.
