E-mail notification

I am using 9.1.4691, and I am trying to test send a MAPI notification. After I have set it up I only get the "notification is queued" message. The message sytem used to work very well, and now it doesn't. I can not tell you what has happened since it started to not work..ie..MS patches, or veritas updates or patches. Everything is set up the way it should be in reference to:

I also read post:
E-mail notification queued but not sent...?
and it did not help. Am I not doing something right? Is there a service that needs to be running for my messages to be sent out? If so, do I also need a service running on my exchange server?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you send an email with your local MAPI client, like Outlook ?

Well, I ended up seting up the SMTP and after I restarted Outlook everything started working just fine.
