This error may come up when taking the backup of Shadow Copy Components on Windows 2003 server.
Since AOFO uses VSS to backup Shadow COpy Components, and if there are issues with Shadow CC this error can come.

The following steps may help:

1. Make sure that the Volume shadow copy service is started and running.
2. Make sure that you are able to select Volume shadow copy components in the backup selections.
3. In the command prompt type in VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS and see if you are receiving any errors.

Follow this technote which has the stesp to do the same.

"How to troubleshoot the error "A failure occurred querying the Writer status" (a000fed1 HEX or e000fed1 HEX) using VSSADMIN"

If you see any errors on Writers follow this Microsoft Q article

"Time-out errors occur in Volume Shadow Copy service writers, and shadow copies are lost during backup and during times when there are high levels of input/output"
Contact Microsoft to install a patch to fix this issue.
