You can use GRT in Active Directory jobs as long as they are full jobs. Do you have AOFO enabled? Make sure you are fully patched and the updated remote agent is pushed out to the remote servers.
From the above error looks like you are doing GRT backup of Active Directory and end of the backup it perform the catalog to build the GRT were it is failing on the contrary if you run the backup with GRT disabled for Active directory then it should work fine
