Error while restoring an Exchange 2003 database to Recovery Storage Group

Unable to restore the selected Microsoft Exchange database 'Western' because it is currently mounted. Use the Exchange System Manager to dismount it, and then retry the job.
V-79-57344-65072 - Connection to the restore target has been lost. Operation canceled

We are using Backup Exec 10d with the Exchange Agent. We are able to successfully restore the database over the live database but when we try to restore using the Recovery Storage Group we get the error above. We are not using the Volume Shadow copy - we are using the Exchange Agent for backup.

The store is not mounted.

We are in the process of migrating to Exchange 2003 this weekend. This is one of the backup tests in the process.

We were able to successfully do this in our Test environment.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,

Do you run snapshot backups of exchange?

Please perform the following:

Open regedit.exe
Browse to HKLM:Software\Veritas\Backup Exec\Engine\ESE
Click on Edit - New - DWORD Value
Type Value_name = "ignore mount state"
Value = DWORD(1)
Recycle Backup Exec services on both servers.
Run the restore job thereafter.

Do keep us updated on the issue.

Thanks!

We do not run snapshot backups of Exchange.

If we edit the registry as suggested is there any way that the live database could get overwritten or does this registry change only affect the Recovery Storage Group.

Unless we have that guarantee we can't afford to make this kind of change.

Let us know. Thanks.

The change to the registry worked. Thank you.

We are having an issue when attempting to restore to the Recovry storage Group, we have followed the post from veritas yet we contine to receive the error:

Final error code: a000848c HEX
Final error description: Unable to attach to one of the drives.

I wanted to confirm that our version of Backup Exec supported the Recovery storage restore, we are currently using Veritas Backup Exec v.9.0 build 4454

If V9 supports the Recovery storage restore wondering if we might ID the issue with the a000848c

I'm posting this to assist anyone else having a simular issue.

Issue: Attempts to restore Exchange server to Recovery Stroage Group Fails after performing all the steps from support, and you receive a messaged access denied or security error.

Possible solution: After two week of trying to restore the same tape from backup to an external USB drive we configured the Recovery storage Group database to place the data on an internal hard drive which worked fine.

It appears that even though you can restore DATA to an external USB drive, the recovery storage Group will not restore to an external USB drive, so if your attempting to restore to a USB drive and it's failing try restoring to a local hard drive even if there is not enought room, you can cancle the restore once you see a byte count.

We are seeing the exact same behavior. Before I apply the registry change, could someone confirm that the change will not affect our production group? We just got a license for the Exchange Agent this week and we are testing out the capability and I can't get a valid restore because of the exact error on the top of the page. We have followed the posted instructions to the letter for how to do the restore.
