Ex07 On W2k8 GRT Unable to Restore - Anyone Have this Working?

PC_2
Level 3
Hi All,

testing Ex07 on W2008 64-bit with Media server Bex 12 SP1 on W2003 32-bit R2 SP2. Only 8 mailboxes and approx 4gb data in the test environment.

Latest June MAPI/CDO installed on both, no previous version on W2008 as not available. All BEX patches to-date (including manual install of 13684 Exchange patch and subsequent re-install via LiveUpdate).
Agent updated. Multiple reboots just in case. Just trying to backup Exchange GRT, no other selections.

I can successfuly backup to local disk.
I cannot backup to local tape - access denied E0008488 - though byte count is identical to the disk job.

Attempt to restore from disk backup immediately fails with E000848C. "Unable to attach to a resource.  Make sure that all selected resources exist and are online, and then try again. For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-33932" - not much help there!

Agent diagnostic log:

Same domain for both boxes. Domain account used to run Bex has a live mailbox and all Exchange permissions. Agent running under same account. Attempting to restore that account's own mailbox or any other mailbox/message gives the same result.

Plan B of using W2003 to host Exchange is not an option as we require Ex07 Sp1 for replication.
Plan C is using a different backup product (any ideas here?) but with Bex experience back to V8 and in use on all production servers...........

Cheers,

Hi, does the account used for the BEWS services have an exchange mailbox?

Hi, did you check this TechNote: Attempting to back up an Exchange 2007 Information Store from a 32-bit media server fails. http://support.veritas.com/docs/295694 ??

Yes, done all that and I'm not getting the log/ESE error.

Hi, it's pretty important, that the used account is created properly.
In any case, create a new one and follow the TN and make sure, the mailbox for the account is really UNIQUE.

How to backup Exchange 2007 with Backup Exec for Windows Servers (BEWS)

Ese.dll is version 8.1.274.0 on both W2008 Ex07 and W2003 32-bit Bex server.

The account in use is named 'Exgrt' and has no close matches, no other account names even start with E.

Exgrt is an Exchange Org, Recipient and PubFolder Admin plus Exchange server Admin on the Ex07 box.
Exgrt is a domain admin and has been added to local admins on the Exchange server as well.

Same account runs all Bex and Agent services, it can backup Exchange GRT (to disk only) and the logs do get truncated.

I have the exact same problem.   Access denied E0008488 when backing up to tape.   I know the account i'm using has sufficient permissions.   The ese.dll is at 8.01.0274.000.

Has anyone gotten this to work yet?

I'm having the exact same issue. Have also been through the MAPI installations and the backup-admin users settings, but still got the same errors.

Backups happen fine to disk, Mailboxes appear in restore list. Backups to tape fail with access denied. Restores fail with Unable to attach to a resource

Any help from anyone would be appreciated tearing my hair out now

This past Friday I was on the phone with Symantec for over 1 hour trying to resolve this issue.  The technician was remoted into our servers to try to fix the problem but couldn't find a solution.   The issue has been escalated to their next level of support.  Once I get a solution to this issue I will post it.

I just got of the phone with a Symantec A+ supporter and he was actually able to fix my problem (after a couple of hours).
The problem is something with MAPI and Windows 2008 server. He sais I have a DNS issue, but since all of you guys have the same problem i doubt it. However, the solution is:
Add your server (both just the name and the fully quallified dns) and ip address to your hosts file. You'll find the host file under c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc.
127.0.0.1       localhost
::1             localhost
192.168.150.18 mail
192.168.150.18 mail.domain.tld
This did the trick for me. Hope this will help you guys, too.
Cheers.

fiNal,

Thanks for posting a possible solution. However, I have a few questions.

  • The manual DNS settings in the hosts file, are these supposed to be set on the media server, the Exchange server, or the DNS server?
  • The full DNS name, should this be the internal or the external FQDN?
  • The "::1 localhost", what's that?
  • Does the restore work as well after implementing the changes?

Thanks,

Johnny

Hi All,

I have tried to run the restore and it completes successfully.

In my case i made the host update on the exchange server which is running backupexec 12.

Looks like that has done the trick. Thanks "fiNal" for the suggestion.

::1 localhost is the IPV6 representation of the local loopback address 127.0.0.1.

Kiri

you're welcome :)
i'm glad it works for other people too, i've spent almost 2 days (and about 5-6 hours on the phone with symantec) to get this to work.
1. put the mail and mail.domain.tld in the hosts file on your exchange running win2k8
2. internal dns name (since backupexec doesn't care much about how you reach your exchange from outside)
3. ::1 is the ipv6 equivalent of 127.0.0.1 (loopback) and is a default entry in a win2k8 hosts file.
4. this fixes the restore problem only. backup worked for me before adding these lines to the hosts file
ps: you don't need to restart any servers or flush dns entries, the hostfile works as soon as you saved the file.
here's a bit more details on what the problem could be (or how my symantec supporter figured it out):
there's a tool out there called mfcmapi, download it to your win2k8/ex2k7 server. (attention: you can change a lot of mailbox settings with MfcMAPI and destroy your mailboxes with it, so do not change stuff unless you know what you're doing).
log in as your backup exec user to your win2k8 server and run MfcMAPI. Click Session and Logon and display Store table. create a new MAPI profile for the backup exec user and enter the mail servers CAS-identity (e.g. MAIL). MfcMAPI will tell you that it could not resolve the mailserver and communication to the exchange is not possible. the only way to make MfcMAPI connect to your exchange server is by typing in the IP address. the tool will then be able to connect, but still does not work properly.
i guess the backup exec agent running on your exchange server has the same problem when tying to connect to the exchange. backup exec agent uses mapi to restore single documents to a mailbox. i believe this happens because win2k8 does not come with any MAPI support (remember that you had to download and install the mapi and cdo-dlls). even after installing the mapicdo package, the support seams very limited and classic MAPI applications obviously have problems.
by adding mail and mail.domain.tld to your hosts file, the MAPI server resolution works smoothly and McfMAPI will be able to logon - and so does your restore.
by the way, the restore functionality is way better than i expected. no more dismounting of the mailbox database or restore storage groups, you can restore items straight into the users mailbox and they will instantly show up in outlook.

Thanks fiNal!

tested and now working.

I had to add entries only to hosts file on the Ex07 server (server details in 1st post of this thread).

My access denied error message stopped after editing the Hosts file.  I was able to successfully backup the information store.

Thanks for your help

I have a similar problem and i have not been able to fix it, maybe because i have a slightly different environment.

We have: 2 Mailboxserver CCR win2008 x64 with exchnage 2007 SP1x64

1 CAS windows2008 x64 stand

1 HUB windows 2003 X64

i hadded the dns entry in the host file for the CAS, BE Server and both CCR. I even added in the host file the dns entry for the CAS.
