Exchange 2010 Mailbox Backup Strange Behaviour

IanW82

Backup Exec 2014

Windows Server 2008 R2

Backing up Exchange 2010 on remote server with remote agent.

Went to run my weekly restore test yesterday and the mailbox I chose to restore a mail item from had no emails backed up since the 04th November, I was looking at the live mailbox and it had received multiple mails everyday so there where 12 days of mail items not backed up.

I have been through all the mailboxs backed up this morning and I can see only two mailboxes that are experiencing this issue, neither have anything in common that I can see and all the others are showing emails as late as yesterday as I would expect.

Any ideas? It's got me a little confused :\

Thanks!

No, it's a Microsoft tool that comes as part of the Exchange 2010 installation. Check below:

Thanks!

Do you have Advanced Open File Option enabled for the backup? If so, disable it and then run a backup once more.

You can also try duplicating the backup to disk, assuming it is on tape, and see if this shows the mails. Check below on how to do this:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/restoring-exchange-or-individual-mailboxesitems-using-backup-exec-howto

Lastly, just make sure there are no filters in place that might be filtering mails out from a specific date.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply!

I have disabled Advanced Open File and I will check the results tomorrow morning to see what effect this has had.

I tried the solution suggested but it made no difference.

The issue appears to have resolved itself for one of our users but other hasn't had a full mailbox backup since 04-Nov-15 which is a bit of a worry!

Will keep looking!

Ah I see, what is the benefit of having the MS management tool installed? Apologies for my ignorance but when you say media server, are you talking about the Backup Exec server?

This is a requirement to backup Exchange 2010. Media server is the server onto which you load BE
