Exhange 2000 Public Folder Backup Excessively Slow

Sorry if this question has been posted before but there's so many problems backing up E2K Public Folders that I haven't been able to find any with a solution.

I have an E2K/W2K server with BE 9.1 with all Service Packs ( for Exchange/Windows/BE) applied. Backing up the Exchange Information Store and Mailboxes is fine. 60Gb in about 2hrs.

Backing up the Public Folder store is incredibly slow though. For a 4Gb store my auto-cancel of 24hrs kicks in, in fact I've never seen it complete.

The PF Store has been defragged offline. There are no consistency errors and the underlying disk is defragged.

Agents are patched up to date and service account works fine.

Checked everything but I think the the fact that every other Exchange based operation on this server ( IS & Mailbox backup ) works perfectly tells me that there something wrong with either the PF database ( which checks clean ) or the agent.

Has anyone found a successful solution to this problem rather than the "check network drivers" technote that's on the KB?

FYI: Media server also backs up 150GB of data on another server in expected times.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try to split up the backup of the PF database.

Then you should find out which of the subfolders that makes the backup slow.

Also check the number items in you PF database.

Had a similar problem with backup of Mailboxes, because of lots of items.

Btw. It might be an idea to backup to disk when testing.

Hello,

There could be various reasons for slow backup during public folder backups. The reasons range from Exchange database inconsistency to disk fragmentation. Slow performance of backups is also observed due to third party or anti virus applications.

Please go through the documents given below to isolate the issue.

1. Reboot the server.

2. Perform backup of Public folder using BAckup to disk folder.

Also, please check for the following:

1. Stop third party or anti virus applications before running the backup. This is for test purposes.

2. Check the consistency of Exchange database.

3. Uncheck the unnecessary settings in Backup Exec that may slow up the job.
