Expiration of Remote Agent for Windows Systems

Hi All

We have Symantec backupExec 2010 installed on a windows 2008 32bit server. BE is only used to backup the contents on the server. Attachment-01 shows all the licensed components.

Since a couple of days ago we started receiving the following notification

(Server: "SERVER NAME") The trial period for one or more options expires within 14 days.

After the trial period expires, you must enter a license key to use these options. For information about how to obtain a license key, contact your reseller or go to the following URL: https://redirector.symantecstore.com/ipl/trialware.jsp?product_id=A110&locale=en_UK

Options that are set for expiration:

Remote Agent for Windows Systems 11 days remaining

  1. Based on what I found remote agent for windows system service is a necessary service for the proper functionality of the media server of BE.Is there a connection between remote agent for windows system service and Remote Agent for Windows Systems?

2. As shown in the attachment id already says that Remote Agent for Windows Systems is already licensed. What is the reason for us getting this notification?

3. Since this BE installation is backing up only the server which BE is installed do we need to worry about this notification?

Many thanks

If you are backing up the media server you dont worry about the warning . Make sure you make all the selection under local selection in the selection list and not under Windows system  or Microsoft network .

Have look on you backup selection , just to make sure you have not acciedenlty selected some resourese from the remote server. On the media server the only thing which you need is the license key and it does ot install any other components for the remote agent , if the license key is not installed , the  remote agent is  installed automatically in evaluation .

How many remote servers are you backing up ?

You need a remote agent license for each server you backup .

Check if you have license installed here tools--install License keys and agents .

IF you do not have the remote agent license installed the , evalution period start from the day you backup a remote agent and you can backup for a period of 60 days without any license ..

Hi RahulG

Thanks for your reply.

We are backing up only the server which the BE+media server is currently installed.

As per the attached picture it already says the remote agent is licensed but it syas only x number of days remaining out of 60 which is really puzzling us.

Yes, selection list only has items from the local server. No other remote machine or resources is selected.

Does this mean that we can safely ignore the notification?

Do you think that there is no connection between the remote agent for windows system service on the media server and Remote Agent for Windows Systems?

The remote agent service on the Media server is required for functionality and is independent of the licensing so as long as you have a core license for the BE server then it should work.

Did you ever test backing up a remote server and then stop as this countdown might be based on a test you did but discontinued?

IF you are not backing up any remote server you can ignore the notification , as Suggested by Collin a test backup of the remote server would have started the evalaution for the Remote agent .

Hi Both

Its not even possible to run a test backup of a remote aserver as this is the only server  located there .

Anyways glad to hear that the 2 components differ from each other and the core licensing is sufficient for the proper functionality of  the remote agent service. Colin , thanks for the confirmation.

Once again many thanks for all your support.
