File Level VM Backup of Domain Controllers

Hello All. We are using VMWare Consolidated Backup in conjunction with BackupExec 12 to backup our virtual machines. The file level backup jobs that contain two of our domain controllers keep erroring out stating,

Directory mnt\domaincontroller\letters\C\windows\sysvol\staging areas\domain was not found, or could not be accessed.

How do we backup the system state date of a virtual machine using BackupExec 12?

To backup the system state of a virtual machine I'm pretty sure you'll need a BE agent installed on the virtual machine.
