I am looking to find out how to see what the name of the current tape that is loaded in is. Is this possible in BE 12?

Are you refering to BE 12 or BE 2012.

In any case in both the version when the tape is in Tape drive you can run Inventory job to see the name of the tape.

If it is Tape library then you can check the Slots after Inventoring the library.

Thanks,

BE 12 or BE 2012?

What do you want the answer displayed?

Have you run an inventory before trying to get this information?

is there a way to do it without inventoring?

A library with a barcode reader will usually know the barcode of a tape without an inventory (assuming you do import jobs), other than this an inventory is required as BE has no way to know if you have changed the tape.

will doing an inventory erase the data?

No the only thing that will erase date on a tape is an overwrite job (or an append job that becomes an overwrite job)
