Granular backup of WSS 3.0 with content database on separate SQL server

We are running BE v12.5 and we have the Sharepoint agent.  I can see the Sharepoint installation appearing as a Sharepoint farm for backup in the selection lists as expected but our content database is housed on a different server to the sharepoint installation.  I have tried backing it up using the sharepoint resources option but I get an error stating that it should be being backed up using the farm option.. However, my sql box isn't appearing as a farm as it doesn't have Sharepoint installed on it.
How do I do this?

Please make sure that you have installed remot eagent on the SQL server also. Also, add the web server in the sharepoint farm. Web server will point us to the SQL databases and provided Remote Agent is installed on the server, backups should work.
