Help getting autoloader and backups to work

Rod_Drake
Not applicable
I am extremely lost! I just purchase a new autoloader. My old way of backing up was separate tape devices with different version of backup exec.

Where do I begin to backup all of my servers to the autoloader. I am not sure if I have the right software package or if I need remote agents installed. I tried to map drives in the user-defined section but that would not work either. What am I doing wrong??

Before have a better answer to your question, can you please tell us how many backup drive is in the autoloader?
How many servers needs to backup and what is their data size to be backed up? Are they on SAN? Are they F&P or email server etc.

Solution is very depends on your backup requirement. If you can provide more information, that will be helpful.

My site has autoloader with single backup drive and autoloader with four backup drives. I may be able to share my experience.

Example A - other servers has tiny data
You can purchase remote agent for them and configure backup job in media server to back them up.
I personally don't recommend backup remote server without remote agent unless the shared folder is less than 1GB and files are static.

Example B - multiple drives autoloader with servers on SAN
I am using SAN Share Option, Library expansion pack to share the autoloader for multiple media servers.

From my experience, the difficult part for me in using autoloader is to learn how to partition media slots and define a good media pool with proper media protection period for different backup jobs.
You better familiar with the above before utilize the autoloader.

Hope this help.

Hi,

-- How many tape drives does the autoloader contain?

Support for a single robotic library drive is included with Backup Exec for Windows Servers. To obtain licenses for additional robotic library drives, you must purchase the optional VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows Servers - Library Expansion Option (LEO). Please refer to page no. 1175 onwards of the Backup Exec Administrator's manual for more information.

-- If you want to back up data of remote servers to the autoloader connected to media server, you will need to purchase remote agent license. Refer this technote:
