Hotfix 306240 results in Exchange VSS failures

Two separate pairs of media servers running Backup Exec 12 SP1 on Windows 2003 SP2 x86 and Exchange Server 2007 SP1 servers on Windows Server 2003 X64 SP2 (with the VSS hotfix rollup KB940349), both backing up successfully.

Then I allow Liveupdate to install hotfix 306240 on the media servers and I reinstall the remote agents on the Exchange Servers.

Hotfix 306240 is supposed to prevent a VSS backup incorrectly truncating Exchange logs if it fails (http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/306240.htm, http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/306356.htm), which looks like a very serious bug.

Both then fail to backup with:

Backup- \\SERVERNAME\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group
V-79-57344-65235 - A failure occurred setting the Component backup status.

Backup- \\SERVERNAME\System?State \\SERVERNAME\System?State
Writer Name: Microsoft Exchange Writer, Writer ID: {76FE1AC4-15F7-4BCD-987E-8E1ACB462FB7}, Last error: The VSS Writer failed, but the operation can be retried (0x800423f3), State: Failed during backup complete operation (12).

On the Exchange Servers VSSAdmin reports the Exchange Writer as failed with a retryable error.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Since I posted the above I have managed to remove Hotfix 306240 from one media server and one Exchange Server, and have made a successful backup of the Exchange store, which seems to confirm 306240 as the culprit.
